Books for Treats - Halloween

Books for Treats is part of the Alliances Free Books for Kids Program.

Books for Treats has caught on in many communities since Rebecca Morgan of San Jose, CA began offering books to the ghouls and goblins at her home in 1995. At her local library book sale she bought gently read children’s books for about what she was spending on candy. According to Nielsen Research the average person spends nearly $15 on the Halloween candy — much of it being consumed before Halloween by the adults or their kids. She bought dozens of books covering toddlers to sixth grade, roughly sorted them by grade level and let her trick-or-treaters choose from among the books.

Here is the reaction Rebecca got : "Kids run to the curb waving their hard-cover treat, saying, ‘How cool — I got a book!’ Parents help pick out their kid’s book and the kids compare books with their friends and offer to swap when they were done with it. I’d never had a kid raising a candy bar, running to the sidewalk yelling about it. I knew I was on to something.”

We will be giving away free new books to children under 12 instead of treats on Halloween, October 31st, from 1 to 3pm. Our office is in the Sherwood Business Centre at 161 St. Peter's Road. See you on Halloween!
